Head of Department

Prof. Madhura P. Mahajan (View Profile)

Welcome to the Department of Printing Engineering

The department was established in the year 1985 by our Founder, Principal and Director Dr. Pa. Bha. Kulkarni. Started as a small department with strength of 30 students has now a developed into a flourished department with 30 batches passed out till date. The curriculum covers all aspects of graphic design, print media and packaging along with interdisciplinary courses like computer, mechanical, electrical, electronics and information technology.

Strength of Print: Tangible and Engaging

We cannot imagine a world without Print and Packaging. From the time we rise till the time we sleep we are continuously using on an average 240 printed products. Our students in this programme of engineering comprehend the science and technology that produces this print and also develop innovative print products and mechanisms useful for the Printing Industry. Companies visiting the campus for recruitment are Hindustan Times, Tetra Pak, Repro India, Parksons Packaging Delta Printing Press, Dubai etc.

Department of Printing Engineering

Printing engineering department established in the year 1985 with undergraduate course. Major Research Projects completed/ongoing in last five years
  1. Title: Effect of Electrostatic Assist on Gravure Printability

    Duration: 1 year
Principal Investigator: Dr. Akshay V. Joshi
    Amount: Rs. 5,78, 025/-

    Research Outcomes
    • The ink transfer from gravure cell to the substrate was improved at 19 sec ESA current of 1.4 mA, 10 kV voltage with 3 mm air gap.
    • Reduction in solid mottle by 69.95% and 91.53% and reduction in halftone mottle by 65.27% and 61.94% for both NC and NC-PU inks respectively.
    • Enhancement in print gloss by 12.04% and 17.97% for both NC and NC-PU
    • Speckles completely eliminated for both the inks.
    • Dot circularity for NC and NC-PU inks was enhanced by 2% at 60 lpcm, 21 sec viscosity, 12 kV and 1.5 mm air gap.
  2. Title: Optimization of Flexo Process Parameters to Reduce Overall Manufacturing Cost

    Duration: 1 year
Principal Investigator: Dr. Akshay V. Joshi
    Amount: Rs.3, 00,000/-

    Research Outcomes:
    • Optimized settings led to reduction in ink gsm by 18% with desired Delta E and overall improvement in printability by 27%.
    • Viscosity, Anilox Volume, Plate Type and Substrate Opacity are significant in minimizing print defects and enhancing printability.
    • Higher substrate opacity resulted in lower ink GSM with Delta E and print density in a tolerable window frame.
    • Increasing the substrate opacity is more cost effective as the price of master batch is lower than ink cost.
    • The findings of this study shall save an overall Rs. 3 per kg for 8-color commodity or specialty job.
  3. Title: Effect of Ink Transfer on Gravure Print Quality

    Duration: 1 year
Principal Investigator: Dr. Akshay V. Joshi
    Amount: Rs.6, 05, 404/-

    Research Outcomes:
    • Ink laydown was optimal at60 l/cm in both 50 GSM and 65 GSM C1S paper substrate.
    • The print defects were reduced by 50.07% and 54.39% in 50 GSM and 65 GSM,
    • Optimal ink transfer on the substrate was observed at 19 sec viscosity,      667 m/s speed, 1.2 mA and 1.1 mA ESA current for 50 GSM and 65 GSM        achieved at 10 kV voltage and 3 mm air gap.
    • The improvement in solid mottle, halftone mottle, print gloss and line jaggedness was found to be 61.30%, 84.39%, 14.33% and 39.67% for 50 GSM while 52.38%, 83.62%, 6.68% and 74.89% for 65 GSM C1S paper.
    • The missing dots were completely eradicated for both the substrates.
  4. Title: Effect of Electrostatic Assist on Defect Reduction in Shrink Films

    Duration: 1 year
Principal Investigator: Dr. Akshay V. Joshi
    Amount: Rs. 11,52,274/-

    Research Outcomes:
    • Void area was minimized by 96%.
    • Solid mottle was reduced by 57% for PVC and 54% for PETG
    • Halftone mottle was minimized by 33% for PVC and 32% for PETG
    • Dot skips was eradicated by 100% for PVC and PETG.
    • The statistical model equations showed R-sq > 90% indicating a good fit of the model with experimental data for the print defects.
    • Psycho-physical analysis for mottle revealed identical results with instrumental
  5. Title: Investigation of Print Mottle on Shrink Films

    Duration: 1 year
Principal Investigator: Dr. Akshay V. Joshi
    Amount:Rs. 10, 78, 270/-

    Research Outcomes:
    • Solid mottle was reduced by 50% for PVC and 34% for PETG at 70 lpcm line screen while 35% for PVC and 28% for PETG at 130 degree stylus angle.was minimized by 96%.
    • Halftone mottle was minimized by 28% for both PVC and PETG at 70 lpcm line screen while 28% for PVC and 26% for PETG at 130 degree stylus angle.
