Orientation session under AICTE Margadarshak Scheme

Mentor: Dr. K. G. Narayankhedakar

Date: 5 December 2022

Prof. Dr. K. G. Narayankhedkar, IIT Bombay, has been appointed as mentor for this institute. Online meeting is conducted to discuss PBL.
Dr. Mrs. U. S. Thakar, NBA Coordinator welcomed all for the session.
I/C principal, Dr. M. R. Tarambale explained the purpose of the meeting. The agenda is to discuss Project based Learning PBL activity.
Following points were discussed:-
  1. Project based learning (PBL) and program outcome (PO) – Every PO is directly or indirectly associated with PBL.
  2. Course outcomes- For FE, three outcomes were directly taken from the syllabus. There can be 5 to 7 COs that needed to be reframed.
  3. As per OBE and National Education Policy, system should be student centric rather than learning centric. First 5 POs emphasizes solving complex engineering problem. But it is quite challenging to address with normal academic courses as it has a time constraint of 60 min of lecture. PBL gives opportunity to work on complex engineering problem.
  4. At FE level, topic decision can be through books/Journals/Magazines from library, group discussion or discussion with supervisor.
  5. PBL workbook needs to be maintained to keep record of weekly progress.
  6. Seema Joshi, In-charge of PBL at FE explained PBL activity conducted at FE level for 2019 course. Students completed activity titled “To find current value of fixed asset”. Students completed through MCQ test, providing plans, measurement charts, abstract sheets etc.
  7. M. P. Bhawalkar explained activity with ‘Electric bills’. Students learnt about reading the bills, remedies for energy saving, decision of illumination required for the room as per the size etc.
  8. Mrs. Ranjeeta Ghosh explained activity related with carbon foot print. In this students were given online calculator for measurement. Remedies for reducing carbon foot print were asked from them.
  9. PBL activity should be student driven activity and supervisor driven activity. Opportunities must be given to the students for defining projects.
  10. There can be group of 4 to 5 students. Different projects can be for different level of students.
  11. In level 1, ideas for topics can be taken from the students. In level 2 , ideas can be modified and the guidelines can be given by supervisors. In level 3, remaining 50 % ideas can be generated by the supervisors. For ideas, there should be scope for out of box thinking. Challenges lead to innovation. Not a routine type of a problem should be given. Live problem from industry/alumni can be addressed.
  12. Evaluation- Continuous evaluation about idea generation, progress and final outcome should be done.
  13. Few ideas for PBL e.g. automatic ceiling fan cleaning, remote ON/OFF of lights, charging of batteries in the vehicle itself etc. were discussed.
  14. Continuous development of the project - Project development is a continuous process. In the first year, idea needs to be decided and the necessary preparation should be done. In second year, this idea needs to be further developed through working prototype/ model etc. This project will be continued in the third and the fourth year for product development and for patents and publications.

Mentor: Dr. K. G. Narayankhedakar

Date: 12 December 2022

Prof. Dr. K. G. Narayankhedkar, IIT Bombay, has been appointed as mentor for this institute. Second Online meeting on PBL is conducted.
Dr. Mrs. U. S. Thakar, NBA Coordinator welcomed all for the session.
I/C principal, Dr. M. R. Tarambale explained the purpose of the meeting. The agenda is to discuss Project based Learning PBL activity for FE and other departments.
Following points were discussed:-
  1. First year department presents COs in the sequence as identify, generate, apply, demonstrate, evaluate. Guidelines received as instead of demonstrate word, compare/evaluate can be used. For first year CO 1 to CO5 are sufficient, but for SE onwards CO6 needs to be designed and it should be at the level of 5 or 6 of Bloom’s Taxonomy which is evaluate and create.
  2. Mrs. Shrilekha Ghatte asked about the guidelines for execution of PBL. Supervisors from various departments will be appropriate. Two faculty members, one from FE and one from engineering department would be guiding group of 30 students.
  3. For topic finalization, two hour session can be arranged by mentor. Cluster of 5 to 6 students from the team will be brainstorming on the topic. At the end, each group will be presenting idea in front of 30 students to get the feedback. This activity should be included in the time table. PBL is combination of class work, computer lab and lab work.
  4. Kshama Balbudhe from IT dept presents PBL conduction. For IT, in CO1, modification is required. Instead of design directly, it needs to be modified to Idea formation. CO6 should be for the level 5 or 6 of Bloom’s taxonomy.
  5. Demonstration of code editor was given. The challenges faced by the students and the remedies for it must be mentioned.
  6. Out of 21 groups, 4 should be at the best level, 14 can be at the middle level and 3 to 4 at the low level. For middle level projects, help from mentor is required. Gap between best and middle level should be decreased. Later, there should be only two levels of projects, excellent and weak projects. Mechanism needs to be developed for converting middle level into best level projects.
  7. Bhadgale from Computer dept presented PBL activity conducted at his dept. He said that group of 4 to 5 students roll call wise was created. Three ideas were presented from the students and out of which 1 best idea is approved.
  8. The sequence for PBL can be Problem definition, Literature review, project plan, design (feasibility report, challenges), project report, feasibilities (Technical feasibility, operation feasibly, economic feasibility), system requirements, software requirements, conclusion (helpful to society etc)
  9. In a mixed group, motivation to slow learner can be given through counseling.
  10. When defining COs, PO 6 to 12 such as societal, team work, life-long learning, project management etc. can be addressed. PO on ethics can be addressed considering professional ethics. Students should be provided standard norms such as coding standards, design standards etc. Achieving PO on ethics is not breaching of these standards and building standard product or developing process.
  11. PBL can not be comparted. 2 to 3 projects should be interdisciplinary.
  12. Session ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Ujjwala Thakar, Central NBA Coordinator.
