Industry sponsored projects of AY 2019-20

PROJECT TITLE: VACUUM ASSISTED ENGINE COOLANT FILLING APPARATUS
SPONSORED INDUSTRY: TATA MOTORS PVT. LTD.
PROJECT GUIDE: PROF. S. S. RAMPURKAR & DR. S. T. GAIKWAD

Engine’s cooling system is crucial in order to keep engine running. In most of vehicle liquid cooling is used. Coolant, that circulates around engine, need to be filled in radiator through radiator cap. However direct coolant filling result into formation of air pockets inside system. These air pockets are removed by increasing temperature of coolant (by running engine for some time) and removing air from air bleed valve. This process requires time and proper engine running conditions also.

Solution to this tedious process is filling the coolant by creating a vacuum in radiator and sucking in the coolant by pressure difference. Vacuum can be created by using shop floor’s compressed air line. After, creating vacuum, radiator can be checked for leakages by using pressure gauge. After ensuring that no leakages are present, valve to coolant inlet can be opened and coolant will be sucked in naturally due to pressure difference. Advantage is that time required for process will be reduced and no use of vacuum pump hence no moving parts.

PROJECT TITLE: A SIDEWALK AUTOMATED DELIVERY ROBOTS (SADRs)
PROJECT GUIDE: PROF. P. G. ANEKAR

E-Commerce and package deliveries are growing at a fast pace and there is an increased demand for same-day deliveries. Established delivery companies and new start-ups are investing in technologies that reduce delivery times and/or increase delivery drivers’ productivity. In this context, the adoption of Sidewalk Automated (or Autonomous) Delivery Robots (SADRs) has a growing appeal. SADRs are pedestrian sized robots that deliver items to customers without the intervention of a delivery person.

For Delivery of item we require a online delivery system like Fed-ex or for delivering food there is Zomato, Uber ears and Swiggy. They all need humans to function as all functions including pickup to delivery is performed by man. The delivery may require lot of time in case of traffic. Also it can be dangerous for delivery person to transport during times like war or pandemic. To solve these small but major issues of delivery we can use autonomous vehicle or Robot as a viable alternative.

Our project is intended to do the similar work as a delivery man, it will pick up, transport and deliver item to required destination. As it will have its own pathway, there will be no delay in delivery time. Thus it will save time along with reduction in human effort. In the pandemic like Covid-19, where human gathering is not allowed, our project can be an viable and effective alternative.

PROJECT TITLE: DESIGN OF RAIL BASED LAUNCHER SYSTEMS
SPONSORED INDUSTRY: DEFENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION
PROJECT GUIDE: DR. S. V. GAWALI

Indian railways, though reliable and adequately operational, are not technologically advanced and safe. In other words, they do not meet the benchmarks set by the advanced European railway technologies.

So, to meet the need of the hour, this project aims to improve the railway systems and virtually implement one of the advancements, i.e. use of articulation in the railways. This system is typically implemented in Jacobs bogies, in which two coaches share a common bogie. The result of this implementation is that the number of bogies are reduced by half and implicitly, the number of wheels are also reduced by half. Hence, this reduces the overall friction between the rails and the bogie wheels and also reduction in overall weight. This will facilitate high speed transportation and also increased safety.

It is the exact time of Indian Railways to meet its technical upgradation and getting its next level infrastructure with high speed rails of India.

PROJECT TITLE: A SEMI-AUTOMATIC BATTERY OPERATED (SABO) GARBAGE SWEEPING MACHINE
SPONSORED INDUSTRY: LA FOUNDATION DASSAULT SYSTEM
PROJECT GUIDE: DR. S. V. GAWALI & PROF. S. S. RAMPURKAR

SABO, A semi-automatic battery operated (SABO) garbage sweeping machine is a proposed solution for garbage collection technique by Product Innovation Lab, PVG’s COET,Pune. Existing Solutions for garbage collection are not optimized for Indian road conditions and complexity of some technology does not allow us to prioritize the quantity needed for maximum effect.Cost, efficiency and ergonomic design are three keyparameters considered in SABO. SABO uses the same principle of reciprocating manual sweeping method but with a long continuous brush that rotates at certain RPM in an enclosed trolley.

SABO reduce labour, considerably increase work output, bristles of the brush adapt to the terrain conditions andis economically feasible.SABO will revolutionize the way of garbage collection and will make our country green and clean.

PROJECTS IN PRODUCT INNOVATION LAB

PROJECT TITLE: ASTEROID: THE HUMANOID ROBOT
PROJECT GUIDE: PROF. S. S. RAMPURKAR

Product innovation lab is working on project “ASTEROID: The Humanoid Robot”. The project has been inspired by poppy humanoid and success of bionic arm.The main motive is to design and build a low cost humanoid robot and to achieve basic movements like walking, self-balancing and pick and dropping which are similar to humans along with making it mobile and wireless. Aspired Humanoid will be of 70cm height and 3 kg weight with 19 degrees of freedom similar to human joints.

The project undertaken aspires to achieve static and dynamic stable walk so that humanoid will be in position to perform assigned task considering its workspace environment flawlessly. We also focused on designing gripper to grasp various objects considering its orientation as pick and drop objects is one of the important motions of the humanoid in any application.

The design has been completed and 3D printing technology available in lab is being used for manufacturing. Kinematic simulation, structural analysis, workspace calculation involves use of ANSYS and MATLAB software. The interfacing of electronic components and developing coding framework to make humanoid motions independent has been accomplished by following then path of interdisciplinary approach. The project opens opportunities for image processing and AI Implementation.

PROJECT TITLE: BIONIC ARM
PROJECT GUIDE: PROF. A. C. KULKARNI

The human hand is a complex system, with a large number of degrees of freedom sensors embedded in its structure, actuators and tendons, and a complex hierarchical control. Despite this complexity, the efforts required to the user to carry out the different movements are quite small. The myoelectric arm works under the influence of Electromyography (EMG) signals extracted from skin surface. The Electromyogram signal is a neuro muscular signal that measures electric potential generated in muscles during their contraction and relaxation representing neuromuscular activities. These Electromyographic signals are utilized to run various motors which enable the user (patient) to grip and move limbs in a much more effective manner. Prosthetic hands are replication of the natural hand, with significantly reduced grasping capabilities and no sensory information delivered back to the user. Despite the significant impact of losing a hand, numbers of amputees requiring prosthesis are too small to push manufacturers to innovate their products, so both the control interfaces and mechanisms have barely changed in the past 40 years.

The outcome of this project is to create a cost effective less weight Bionic Arm that can mimic the hand gestures correctly. This will help lower elbow amputees by providing them a solution that will help them in their day to day tasks. This in turn will give them more independence and improve their quality of life. This Bionic Arm consists of total 14 Degrees of Freedom which includes 11 palm motions and 3 wrist motions. For actuation of fingers linear actuator which works on the principle of slider crank mechanism are used. For thumb servo motor is also used for thumb rotation purpose. In wrist servo motors are used for giving desired degrees of freedom.

Bionic Arm is designed by using 3DExperience platform of Dassault Systems which provided many helpful tools like Part Design, Assembly Design, and Mechanical System Design. 3D Printing is used for manufacturing of Bionic Arm.
